Bamboo Fly Rods

These are the finest, most traditional fly rods. It can take over 100 hours of labor to make bamboo fly rods, from selection of the cane to the wrapping and finishing of the rod. They also tend to be the most expensive. Building bamboo fly rods is a true art. Bamboo fly rods are more flexible than graphite, and they have a slower action which is great for leisurely and refined fishing.

Fiberglass Fly Rods

These are fairly heavy fly rods relative to their size. It can even be 2 or 3 times as heavy as a similarly-sized graphite rod. The good thing about these fly rods, though, is that they are very durable and strong.

Graphite Fly Rods

These are the stiffest rods of the three. They are very strong for their weight. You can make graphite fly rods with slow or fast action. You will find that you have more power, versatility, and performance when using a graphite, rather than a bamboo fly rods.

Bamboo Fly Rods : A Timeless Tradition
Bamboo fly rods are still just as popular today as they were a hundred years ago. Bamboo fly rods must be flexible, lightweight, and have a sensitive touch-this is what they make them perfect.

If you want to make your own bamboo fly rods there are several places that you can purchase the different pieces that you will need including the line guides, the pole pieces, the ferrules (the metal caps on the ends of the each pole piece that act as connectors), the cork grips and the reel as well. The finish on bamboo fly rods should be durable and flexible and should withstand water damage. But, if the do-it-yourself route is not your style, you can purchase bamboo fly rods online.

Caring for bamboo fly rods takes time and precision. If they are not cared for properly they will quickly decay and rot. Clean and dry the wood after each use and use furniture polish occasionally. The ferrules should also be kept free of debris and can be cleaned with denatured alcohol, Vaseline, or lighter fluid. Be careful not to remove any small pieces of cork. As the cork begins to get old it should be replaced.
